She intended to buy carrots and a banana. Somehow she has a hot chocolate and an Italian hoagie. This is not because of magic but because her brain is telling her she needs calories, but the magazines are telling her she needs to starve. She has chosen her brain over the magazines.
The magazines are also everyone else. So its her against the world. In that way, as she eats her hoagie, she is a hero like the hero in that Ibsen play, "Enemy of the People" or Gandhi But Gandhi never ate an Italian hoagie.
